General Track Day Links
A brief introduction to track days.
Car should not be smoking or leaking fluids as this will be a black flag
offense or even lead to refusal of entrance onto the track. Exclusion of
this kind is nonrefundable. All fluids should be checked before going
onto the track. Oil levels need to be at the top as oil surge in the
corners is a real possibility on most cars without baffled sump and this
can lead to oil starvation.
Engines will be running at full throttle for long periods of time so it
is essential that the cooling system is in excellent working order.
Brake pads should have plenty of life left in them as 5 mins track time
can be the same as 100's of miles of road driving.
Tyres will also take massive punishment during track time, while the
tyres should be in good condition used tyres can be used as this may be
preferable to destroying new tyres. Ideally track focused tyres should
be used not only will they last longer but also provide more grip. All
windows and mirrors should be clean.
Driver Prep - If possible try and familiarise with yourself prior to the
track day, there are many UK track guides available for UK Circuits.
Circuit Driver is an excellent starting point. Games console games can
also be a great way of learning the track TOCA touring car has a large
selection of UK Tracks on it which are very realistic. This preparation
can help maximise pushing the car to the limit rather than having to
drive slowly to get to know the track. it is also safer to be up to
speed with the other drivers.
Tracks - Track days are now a popular fixture at many of the premier
race circuits in the UK. Circuits will act as a venue for track day
organisers and/or organise track days themselves directly. Track days
also take place on disused airfields and these tend to be cheaper than
track days on circuits. Track days held on airfields are probably not as
rewarding as circuit track days as the sense of speed is reduced but
they can be an excellent introduction to track days as visibility is
excellent and hard objects are usually a long way from the track itself.
Organisers - The ATDO listed above is our point of reference for any
track day organiser in the UK. All track organisers listed are vetted
and approved by the ATDO which is an independent governing body. Track
day organisers which are part of the ATDO will have all the necessary
safety measures in place such as marshals, insurance and medical staff
and facilities.
Cars Used - Any road car can be used for track days as long they are in
a road worthy condition although track day time will increase the wear
and tear on a car dramatically. There are many disposable track day cars
available in the UK ie cars which can be bought for less than 2000
pounds and provide a lot of enjoyment for little outlay. Obvious track
day cars would include the MK2 Astra GTE this car has the XE engine and
puts out 150hp in a relatively light car. Replacement parts are also
plentiful. The Fiat Tipo 2.0 16V is in the same mould as is the Nissan Primera P10 eGT 150hp and the list goes on.
All in all track days provide excellent entertainment and allow road
cars to be taken to their limit without the threat of speed cameras in a
controlled environment. |
